d.c. fire department boat rescue fleet just isn't what it used to be. this is the john glenn. it is the biggest boat in that fleet. the department still uses it to patrol but given all the potential threats to homeland security, there are questions about just how effective this boat could be. that's because it's out there on the water but the communication system is broken. the radio can't transmit a distress call. also the coast guard documentation has expired. >> part of the communication system doesn't work. it appears the certification for the boat that should have been applied for back in august, the date was missed. >> reporter: so the question now whether to apply for grants to repair the boat. those repairs will cost about $700,000. the other option is to lobby capitol hill and to see if they can get some money to buy a new state of the art boat. there are a couple of options. we have to figure out and wait to see what comes of this. as you mentioned earlier, there are potential discussions of cutting the number of medics during the overnight hours. we'll have more on that s

encompassed and precisely what role it played in his departure. there are precedents in the case of john deutsch who was cia director in the clinton administration briefly. he was fired for taking a cia computer home and using it to access internet sites that he shouldn't have in a way that might have compromised the classified information on that computer. he lost his job and curt clearance. >> we have to ask about benghazi because he was supposed to be testifying later this week about benghazi. to what degree might this tarnish, there will be someone in his place but to what degree might this tarnish any kind of testimony coming from the cia on the matter? >> i don't know that it would tarnish the testimony. petraeus, because he's so visible, he's one of the most famous faces in america, would have been a lightning rod for critics of the agencies performance. he'll be replaced by the acting director who a career agency bureaucrat. he knows the material as well as petraeus does. i think the story they will tell is one of some misjudgments and i think congressional critics rightly will j

congressman elect democrat john delaney from maryland. big picture time. the fiscal cliff of course is a package of across the board tax increases and spending cuts scheduled to kick in at the beginning of the new year. economists say the impact could push the nation into another recession and of course the washington region would be ground zero. now that the election is over, both sides say they are willing to compromise on a deal to avoid the fiscal cliff. president obama called leaders of both parties to start negotiations yesterday. house speaker republican john boehner says he's willing to compromise on raising some taxes to reduce the deficit. but only in conjunction with entitlement reform. vice president biden says the white house is willing to compromise as well. and local leaders are starting to weigh in. >> i think there is a huge opportunity that has to be seized in congress between now and the end of the year to find a path forward so that we can avoid some of the catastrophic consequences of either deep sequestration cuts or willynilly expiring of the bush tax cuts. >>
